The July 2010 Sky
The warm summer nights of July are full of many beautiful celestials treats for all to enjoy. There are some close encounters of the moon and planets, and a moderate meteor shower that will produce some bright shooting stars.
The evening planets this month are Venus, Mars and Saturn. Saturn is in the southwestern sky during early evening and teams up with the moon on the evening of 7/16. Saturn will be to the upper right of the moon on 7/16. Mars will be in the west/southwestern sky early in the evening. Mars will be to the upper right of the moon on 7/15. Venus is in the western sky at nightfall. Venus will be to the upper right of the moon on 7/14.
The early morning planet this month is Jupiter. It can be found in the south/southeastern predawn sky. Jupiter and the moon team up on 7/3 when Jupiter will be to the lower left of our natural satellite.
The phases of the moon for this month are as follows: 7/4 – Last Quarter Moon, 7/11 – New Moon, 7/18 – First Quarter Moon, 7/25 – First Quarter Moon.
The moderate meteor shower, the Southern Delta Aquarids peaks on the night of July 28 and into the morning hours of the 29th.
