Saving the Night

GLASS (Good Lighting Advocates for Starry Skies) is the local chapter of the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA).

The mission of IDA is “To preserve the beauty of the nighttime environment and to restore our heritage of the dark sky through quality outdoor lighting.”

GLASS is composed of members in northwest Illinois and eastern Iowa. They work together informally to spread awareness of good lighting practice that focuses light downward, where it is needed, and that eliminates uplight and glare, both of which cause skyglow and hinder good visibility. Membership in IDA is $30.00 per year, and there are no local dues for GLASS. Contact Bonnie Garrity, chapter president, to join the effort:
(815)777-1264 or email jgarrity@galenalink.com . For addition information on light pollution visit www.darksky.org
